France attack at the forefront at Mpls Bastille Day celebration

- From the flags to the fries, Bastille Day is an ode to everything French, but this year's block party outside Cafe Barbette in Minneapolis is a celebration mixed with sadness.

“It feels solemn at the same time it feels celebratory,” said Leah Malson, who attended the block party.

The minds of many people at the event are on this week's terrorist attack in Nice, where a truck drove through a crowd that had gathered to watch the fireworks for French Independence Day, killing 84 people and injuring more than 200 others.

Not only is the bar collecting donations for the victims of the Nice tragedy, organizers say getting together to celebrate Bastille Day is a show of solidarity for the people of France.

“What we can do is not succumb to fear and still continue to take to the streets and connect and be together and celebrate our humanity,” said Kim Bartmann, the owner of Café Barbette.
