First 90° day in the metro appears a month early

Friday was a hot one! Temperatures soared into the 90s in many parts of the state with the Twin Cities, St. Cloud, Eau Claire, and Duluth all setting record highs.  Duluth was the most impressive, smashing their previous daily record by 9 degrees.  The metro still broke ours with gusto coming in 3 degrees warmer than our 89° record set back in 1934.

And if it seems a bit early for this type of heat, you’re right.  We typically don’t get our first 90° day till early June.  This is following our 2016 trend of hitting milestone temperatures early.  Every benchmark so far this spring has come in anywhere from 2 to 5 weeks ahead of schedule.  Now, we only see the 100° mark every other year on average, so is this the year we get there?  I guess time will tell…
