FBI, local police investigating bomb threats made across country

Law enforcement officials are warning the public about bomb threats that were sent to businesses, schools and universities across the country Thursday afternoon.

Waite Park, Minnesota police reported several business in the St. Cloud area had received nearly identical emails, demanding monetary payments. Police in Winona and Alexandria, Minn. received similar reports.

According to Alexandria Police, the emails requested businesses send Bitcoin as the form of payment.

Officials say the emails are believed to be a scam, but they are working with the FBI to investigate every threat.

"We are aware of the recent bomb threats made in cities around the country, and we remain in touch with our law enforcement partners to provide assistance,” FBI Minneapolis spokesperson Jeffrey Van Nest said in a statement. “As always, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities which could represent a threat to public safety."

Anyone who has received the emails are asked to report them to law enforcement.
