Environmental activists are calling off their campaign against 3M after the Minnesota-based maker of Post-It Notes made changes to its paper sourcing practices. 3M worked with ForestEthics and Greenpeace to ensure that all virgin wood used in its paper products is responsibly sourced to protect forests and respect human rights.
Highlights of new 3M paper policy
3M has agreed to:
- Work with suppliers to trace the origin for all of the wood, paper and pulp it buys and will not source fiber that was obtained in a manner that threatens high-conservation value forests, as defined by guidance developed by the High Conservation Value Resource Network.
- Ensure its suppliers are granted "free, prior and informed" consent by indigenous peoples and local communities before logging operations begin.
- Stop doing business with suppliers who do not adhere to its principles. The company has already canceled its contract with Royal Golden Eagle Group in Indonesia. 3M has also informed Resolute Forest Products that it is concerned with its sourcing practices.
- Reduce the amount of paper and pulp that it uses and increase its use of recycled paper and fiber.
- Stop promoting or using the Sustainable Forestry Initiative label.
- Hire additional staff to implement its policy worldwide.
- Publicly report progress on its paper sourcing benchmarks and policy implementation, with updates posted to the 3M and The Forest Trust websites.
