Eagan HS teacher collapses, dies during 25K trail race on North Shore

An Eagan, Minnesota man died while running in the 25-kilometer Superior Spring Trail Race on the North Shore over the weekend.

Jon Mathson, 41, collapsed on the trail between Moose Mountain and Mystery Mountain near Lutsen shortly before 11 a.m., according to the Cook County sheriff's office. He was only three miles from the finish line at the Caribou Highlands Lodge. A group of responders attempted performed CPR and attempted to resuscitate him, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The official cause of death has not been determined.

Mathson was a three-time finisher of the Superior 25K race. He loved trail running, mountain biking, birding and spending time on the North Shore, according to the race website. 

Mathson taught earth science and chemistry at Eagan High School. 

A GoFundMe page has already raised more than $31,000 to help Mathson's wife and his two-year-old son in the wake of his death.
