Driver turns himself in after fatally hitting skateboarder

- The driver who hit and killed a 15-year-old on skateboard Thursday night has turned himself in, according to the Isanti County Sheriff's Office.

The man is cooperating fully with law enforcement, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

A passerby found Antonio Demeules lying in the middle of the 285th Avenue, just east of Highway 65 in Isanti, Minn. Thursday night. Surveillance video from a nearby business showed a white, standard cab pickup truck traveling westbound on 285th avenue.

A witness said Demeules was wearing dark clothing and riding his skateboard down the centerline of the road just moments before he was hit by the truck. The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“It is believed that the suspect vehicle may not have known they hit a child due to the small stature of the child, that he was in the middle of the road wearing dark clothing and it was almost dark out,” the sheriff’s office said. “Investigators believe this is a terrible accident and not done with malicious intent.”
