Driver fleeing Minneapolis police hits, kills 16-year-old girl

A driver attempting to elude police struck and killed a 16-year-old girl who was walking near the intersection of Emerson Avenue N. and 36th Avenue N. in Minneapolis on Friday night. Minneapolis police arrested the driver a block away from the crash scene, after he ran away and attempted to carjack a family.

At 9:55 p.m. Friday night, officers spotted a car driving recklessly near 36th and Emerson.  When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled and struck the 16-year-old pedestrian. Officers administered first aid until a North Memorial Ambulance arrived. The girl was transported to the hospital, where she later died of her injuries.

The suspect continued driving for a short distance before jumping out of the moving car and running. The empty car continued to roll and crashed into multiple parked cars. Officers recovered a handgun from the suspect vehicle.

Officers arrested the suspect a block away as he was attempting to carjack a vehicle occupied by a family. The suspect was found to have two felony warrants for his arrest. A blood sample was taken from the suspect to determine if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The blood sample will be sent to the BCA for testing.

The suspect is currently at North Memorial Medical Center and will be booked into the Hennepin County Jail upon his release.
