Deputy fatally shot in western Wisconsin, suspect arrested

RUSK COUNTY, Wis. (KMSP) - A Wisconsin sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot Saturday night near Ladysmith, Wisconsin while checking on suspicious vehicle. The suspect was located and arrested Sunday morning.

Rusk County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Dan Glaze, 33, was checking on a suspicious vehicle south of Ladysmith on Broken Arrow Road east of Highway 27 around 10:55 p.m. on Saturday night. Deputy Glaze radioed in that he had located the vehicle in a field, but dispatch lost contact with him. Backup deputies arrived minutes later to discover the deputy had been shot and killed.

Glaze was a seven-year veteran in law enforcement and had been working with the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office for the last one and a half years.

Deputies located the suspect, identified as 43-year-old Doug Nitek, at a residence near the scene of the shooting shortly after 10 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Nitek fired one round at the deputies before surrendering, according to the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office.

Nitek remains in custody. He has not yet been charged.
