Minneapolis police confirmed a man was killed during a gunfire exchange near Highway 55 and Penn Avenue N. on Wednesday afternoon.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting at 3:30 p.m. and found a man dead at the scene. Police said there appeared to be a dispute between several parties that ended in a gunfire exchange, and a car crash was potentially involved. Vehicles were blocked off within in the crime scene.

Several shell casings and at least one gun were recovered at the scene.

One witness described a shootout-esque scene on the busy highway as evening rush hour picked up. Officials blocked all but one lane on Highway 55 westbound and all vehicles leaving downtown Minneapolis were diverted onto side streets.

More than 20 officers were on-scene and investigators are canvassing the area. No arrests have been made.

Police said it's too early to indicate whether the incident is connected to any other recent violence on the north side.

Four investigators have been assigned to the case and have talked with a number of witnesses, but urge anyone with information to call 612-692-TIPS.
