Community rallies in light of recent violence in N. Minneapolis

Community members gathered in north Minneapolis Saturday evening to protest a recent wave of violence that claimed the life of a grandmother on Thursday.

“The senseless violence, the killings of black men and women are happening rain or shine,” said Pastor Jayme Ali.

Investigators said Birdell Beeks was the unintended victim of a shooting this week when she was killed while sitting inside her minivan. Her death marks the city's 10th homicide of the year.

Community leaders are hoping increased efforts to connect with cities overlooked youth will help stem the violence.

“What we do behind the scenes that we don’t do in front of cameras is actually working with these youngsters, actually talking to them, mentoring them, show them we love them,” said Rudy Spelker.
