Church catches fire after car crashes into it

A church in Spring Lake Park is on fire after a car crashed into it and severed a gas line, according to the Spring Lake Park Police Chief.

A car hit the front of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church near the intersection of Monroe Street NE and Osborne Road NE. The car then left the area. Police later found the driver, who was not injured from the crash.

"Within a matter of seconds of the vehicle hitting the building, flames were very apparently visible," said Battalion Chief Jeremiah Anderson of the Spring Lake Park Blaine Mounds View Fire Department.

Officials say about 30 people were inside the church during the incident, but no one was injured. The church was evacuated.

The gas company arrived to turn off the gas line.

The fire damaged the exterior of the roof.
