Charges: St. Paul man stabbed neighbor for helping wife leave him

- A 61-year-old man is charged with second degree murder for fatally stabbing a 29-year-old woman at an apartment in St. Paul, Minnesota Tuesday evening.

According to the charges, the victim, identified as Paw Boh Htoo, lived in the same building as the suspect, Htoo Day. She was friends with Day’s wife, who had confided in her about the problems she was having with her husband and that she was thinking about moving in with some relatives for a while. Htoo had agreed to help her do so.

On Tuesday, police were called to an apartment building on the 100 block of Edmund Avenue West shortly before 5 p.m. on a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, they found Htoo motionless on the floor of her apartment with a stab wound to the chest.

Paramedics took her to Regions Hospital, where she died a short time later.

Through an interpreter, Day’s wife told investigators  the family had moved to St. Paul from Thailand in late 2016.

She said the Sunday before the murder she had left with her two children to stay in Htoo’s apartment. Day had gotten upset with two of their children after they were horsing around and broke a vase. He told them to leave and his wife went with them.

When the wife returned to the apartment later to get her youngest child, Day tried to get her to stay and physically grabbed her. She broke free and went back to Htoo’s apartment with the child.

Day followed her and told her “if she had to be away from him that he would kill her and her family,” according to the criminal complaint. He then pulled out a large, fixed-blade knife and showed it to her.

When they arrived at the Htoo’s apartment, Htoo told Day she would help his wife move in with relatives if that was what she wanted to do.

Day told Htoo she was “aligning with people to be against him.” He then reportedly pulled out the knife and in one fluid motion, stabbed Htoo in the chest.

In an interview with investigators, Day admitted to stabbing Htoo because he thought she was trying to take his wife away. He said he was “angry and drunk and took out the knife and stabbed her,” the charges say.

Day said Htoo had never attempted to physically harm him and admitted what he did was wrong. He is charged with one count of second degree murder.
