A feline used one of its nine lives Sunday evening after being caught in a basement filled with smoke and flames.

The St. Paul Fire Department responded to a call about a couch that was on fire in a basement. On arrival they learned that while the occupants made it out of the house, two cats were still inside.

Firefighters battled the heavy smoke and flames extending from the basement into the first floor. They quickly extinguished the fire and found one of the cats to be lifeless and not breathing, the fire department said.

The cat was brought outside where CPR and oxygen were provided. It responded well to the treatment, woke up and started to move around, a press release said.

The cat’s owner brought it to the vet for further treatment Sunday night.

No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
