Family-owned Carlson hotel business sold to Chinese firm

- Family-owned and privately-held Carlson Hotels, Inc. of Minnetonka, Minn. has been sold to Chinese company HNA Tourism Group. Carlson Hotels includes the Radisson, Quorvus, Park Plaza, Park Inn and Country Inns & Suites hotel brands.

“Since my grandfather, Curt Carlson, founded our company in 1938, our family has run businesses that create opportunity for people and positive change in the world,” said a statement Diana Nelson, Carlson Board chair. “Hospitality is in our hearts, which made this a difficult decision. We strongly believe that selling our hotel business to HNA Tourism Group, a company that fully recognizes its value and heritage, is the best way for us to position it for success and to be true to my grandfather’s legacy in the long term.”

The Carlson Hotels headquarters will remain in Minnetonka and CEO David Berg will remain in the same position. The Carlson Hotels brand is valued at $7.3 billion.

Carlson is the seventh largest privately-held company in Minnesota, employing 27,900 residents, according to Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal research published in September.
