Authorities have identified the body that washed up on the beach near Split Rock Lighthouse over the weekend as Derek Sigurd Hansen, 45, of Minnetonka, Minnesota.

On Saturday, the Lake County sheriff's office received a call about a body that had washed up near the lighthouse on Lake Superior's North Shore.

Authorities believe Hansen may have drowned, but the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation. The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy.

This is the third death in Lake Superior this fall. On Sept. 10, a 14-year-old girl died when she accidentally fell over the cliff at Palisade Head. A 42-year-old New Hope man died on Sept. 23 while diving with a group near the Maderia Shipwreck site near Split Rock Lighthouse.
