BCA: Man fatally shot by officers at sober house was stabbing someone
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has identified the officers involved and provided more details about what led up to a fatal shooting at a sober house in south Minneapolis on April 4.
At 5:13 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call and found a man in the foyer of an apartment building at 2120 Minnehaha Avenue S. The apartment building is a Christian ministry for ex-cons called "Make Old Things New."
According to the BCA:
Raul Salvador Marquez Heraldes, 50, lunged at the officers as they opened the door, and the officers retreated. They could see Marquez Heraldes had entered an apartment, and they followed him in a bathroom. They tried to speak to him through the door, but heard screams from someone else inside the bathroom. After forcing entry, found Marquez Heraldes stabbing a man, then fired their weapons, striking him.
“As the officers attempted to secure him, Marquez Haraldes struggled with the officers, at which time Officer Robins sustained an injury to his hand,” the BCA said.
The stabbing victim, a resident of the apartment, Alan Robert Coleman, 63, was initially taken to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) then transferred to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where he remains hospitalized.
Officer Robins was taken to HCMC where he was treated and released. Marquez Heraldes was taken to HCMC where he later died. The Hennepin County medical examiner’s office determined he died of multiple gunshot wounds.
Once the BCA’s investigation is complete, the BCA will turn its findings over to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for review.
-Officer Eric Mulmberg has been with the Minneapolis Police Department for three years.
-Officer David Robins has been with the Minneapolis Police Department for two years.
Both are on standard administrative leave.
