10 dead, 7 injured in shooting at Oregon community college

ROSEBURG, Ore. (KMSP) - Ten people were killed and seven more were injured during a mass shooting at a community college in Roseburg, Oregon today. The Douglas County sheriff confirmed the 20-year-old male shooter is also dead. 

Deputies responded to reports of an active shooter at Umpqua Community College, about 180 miles south of Portland, around 10:38 a.m. local time, according to Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin. Upon arrival, deputies located the shooter in one of the buildings. The sheriff said he was killed in a shootout, but did not say whether police killed him or he took his own life.

"Our thoughts and prayers are not enough,” President Obama said from the White House. “It does not convey the heartache and anger we feel.”

The president was one step ahead of his critics, predicting the comments that will undoubtedly fill your social media feeds that Obama is making this a political issue. But the president said mass shootings should absolutely be a political issue.

“If you think this is a problem, then you should expect your elected officials to reflect your views,” Obama said.

The president challenged the media to put deaths from U.S. gun violence and deaths from terrorism side-by-side. What do the numbers say? 8,512 gun violence-related deaths in America so far in 2015, compared to 18 terrorism-related deaths confirmed in the United States in all of 2014.

Gun-free campus

The college is located about 180 miles south of Portland. Approximately 3,000 students attend the school. According to the Douglas County sheriff, the school is a gun-free campus and does not have armed security guards.
