AAA predicts more travelers this Thanksgiving

A wintry mix of snow and freezing rain is sweeping through Minnesota, just in time for Thanksgiving travel. But even with the weather, AAA predicts holiday travel records may be broken.

According to AAA, so far every major travel holiday this year, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day and Thanksgiving week, more people are traveling.

Officials believe historically low gas prices are putting a lot of drivers behind the wheel.

"But we expect nearly 49 million Americans to travel 50 miles or more between Wednesday and Sunday, so it's going to be very busy out there, very crowded roadways because more than 90 percent are traveling by personal automobile," said Gail Weinholzer, AAA representative.

The airport will be busy as well. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has seen a three percent increase in passenger traffic this year. Peak passenger traffic will be on Wednesday. The airport expects 35,000 people to go through security.
