ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) - A very special party was held at Como Zoo on Monday morning – Arlene the baby western lowland gorilla celebrated her first birthday.
Mom Dara and dad Schroeder welcomed Arlene into the world after an eight-and-a-half month gestation period. Young gorillas stay with their mothers for several years after birth, so Dara and Arlene will continue to spend plenty of time together. At birth, baby gorillas weigh between 4 and 5 pounds.
Native to the lowland forests of Central and Western Africa, western lowland gorillas are critically endangered.
