LAKEVILLE, Minn. (KMSP) - People staying at a Lakeville, Minn. motel were awakened by a five-alarm fire early Sunday morning in the weekend heat, some firefighters suffering heat exhaustion battling the flames.
Firefighters said the fire started in a third-floor room of the Friendly Host on Kenrick Avenue just off 35W and spread to two others, but it remained unclear what initiated the fire late Sunday morning. About 50 firefighters from Lakeville, Burnsville and Apple Valley were called to help and buses were called to the scene to shelter guests.
Lakeville Fire Chief Mike Meyer said there were no fatalities, but 6 firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion and one person was transported to an area hospital for a non-fire related injury. Five guests were treated and released on scene.
The Red Cross and neighboring Hope Community Church are helping those without a place to stay. It’s unclear if anyone will be let back into the building on Sunday.
