6 surprises on Minnesota unclaimed property list

- Last week, a pair of Minnesota state representatives announced that 1 in 20 residents have more than $100 in unclaimed property. Monday morning, Rep. Joe Atkins (DFL-Inver Grove Heights) and Sen. James Metzen (DFL-South Saint Paul) released a list of well-known names with money to claim.

Tony Sutton, former Republican Party of Minnesota chairman
Amount of funds being held: $508.74, to his now-closed local restaurant, Baja Sol.

Status: Heirs being notified

Amount of funds being held: $2,000.00
Status: Notified by mail

The amount of unclaimed money being held by the State of Minnesota has reached a record $711.5 million, which is triple the amount held in 2005. Atkins and Metzen have proposed a bill (H.F. 1693/S.F. 1645) that would require the Commerce Department to make a stronger effort to reunite missing money with its rightful owner.
