MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Two children were seriously injured in a crash late Saturday night on Interstate 35W in Minneapolis. According to the Minnesota State Patrol’s preliminary incident report, a Dodge Avenger rear-ended a Kia Sedona minivan that was stalled in the center lane of northbound 35W, just south of W. 50th Street.
The minivan was carrying 10 people at the time of the crash. The State Patrol identified the driver as a 32-year-old woman from St. Paul. Her 9 passengers were all children, ranging in age from 12 to just a few months. A 12-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy were taken to HCMC with serious injuries. The others were taken to HCMC with less-serious injuries.
The driver of the Dodge Avenger -- a 49-year-old man from Chanhassen, Minn. -- was taken to Fairview Southdale Hospital.
The accident happened shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday. Alcohol was not detected at the scene, according to the State Patrol’s report. It’s unknown if all children in the van were wearing their seat belts. Kia lists the Sedona as an 8-passenger vehicle.
