LIBERIA, Costa Rica (KMSP) - A Twin Cities couple had a scary experience on a flight home from Costa Rica Tuesday after an engine on their plane overheated, forcing the pilots to turn around and land back where they started.
Tom Johnson and Alissa Slagter of Woodbury spoke over FaceTime as they waited for another flight out of Costa Rica, and told Fox 9 they were just thankful to the pilots for getting them down safely.
About 40 minutes into a layover flight to Houston, pilots announced they were turning around, which wasn't scary in itself, according to the couple. It wasn't until the landing that things got dicey.
"[The plane] initially tilted to the left, I believe, as we were about ten feet off the ground," Slagter said. "We were on the right side of the plane and it looked like we were about to do a somersault to the right ... the right wing almost touched the ground."
They were in the country looking for a rental property, hoping to live there temporarily to give their kids an international experience.
The couple hopes to be back in the cities sometime Tuesday night.
