Washington Co. searching for man after boat submerges in St. Croix River

-

The Washington County sheriff's office is looking for a man after the boat he was on became submerged Sunday around 3:00 a.m. on the St. Croix River near Bayport, Minn.

According to authorities, there were two people on board when the boat started taking on water near the entrance to the Bayport Marina.

A female made it to shore and was uninjured, but officials are still looking for the man.

Search and rescue crews took to the water Sunday, while the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said they are searching both water and land.

“He could have hit a sandbar or some rocks and taken off the running gear on the bottom of the boat and at that point water is just going to start rushing in the engine compartment,” said boat salesman and local resident John Tetzlaff.

Tetzlaff was one of dozens of people who pulled off Highway 95 in Bayport Sunday to see the submerged boat, which was less than 100 yards from shore.

“Going through here I don’t think you’d have a collision unless you did something crazy and got close to the break waters,” said one man who keeps his boat on the river.

Search crews were pulled off the water before sundown Sunday.

Names of the individuals will not be released at this time.
