ST. PETER, Minn. (KMSP) - When Ervin and Verna Kaduce got married, The Great Depression was in full swing and Superman had just become the world's first superhero.
Now the St. Peter, Minnesota couple is celebrating being married for 78 years.
"[Verna] came around at the right time," Ervin said at the couple's nursing home.
After dating for a couple of years, they tied the knot in 1938, when Verna was 17 and Ervin was 20.
"He needed a cook and I needed a husband," Verna said. "I knew he was the one. I knew him all my life."
Over the next eight decades, they raised six children on their family farm in Mapleton. But, they lost one. Their son Larry, in a motorcycle accident in Sturgis, South Dakota last year.
"We just didn't have any deaths in our family, except some uncles. It was devastating," Myron, the Kaduce's oldest son, said.
Even after all these years, Ervin and Verna still hold hands several times a day and rely on their faith to get them through.
"I took my vows seriously and the days when things didn't work out, he would always say 'trust in the lord and tomorrow will be better'," Verna said.
A couple of years ago, they were named the "Longest Married Couple" in Minnesota.
As for the secret to their marriage's longevity, they say keeping an open mind and heart goes a long way.
"You always got to look on the brighter side," Verna said. "There's always something worse."
In addition to their five children, the Kaduces have 24 grandkids, 47 great-grandkids, 14 great-great grandkids, and one great-great-great grandchild.
Many of them will be at the couple's official anniversary party on Saturday.
