MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Diamond Reynolds, Philando Castile’s girlfriend, and her 4-year-old daughter were in the car when he was shot to death by Officer Yanez.
In an interview, Reynolds told Fox 9, she is convinced if she did not turn on her Facebook live stream in the immediate moments after the deadly traffic stop, there would be no charges against St. Anthony police officer, Jeronimo Yanez.
When asked if this was murder, Reynolds said, “Yes, absolutely witnessed an assassination, an execution...Those are my visionaries.”
She doesn’t feel second degree manslaughter and a maximum sentence of 10 years is enough.
“I feel as though murder to the highest extent of the law would be necessary and more appropriate.” Reynolds said.
Reynolds and her daughter were an arm’s length away when Officer Yanez shot Castile seven times.
“A lot of people look at me as a hero, a community advocate, but some people absolutely hate me and feel it should have been me instead.” Reynolds said.
Many hope this case will serve as a national example of how prosecutors can hold police officers accountable.
“Hadn’t I put myself in danger, we never would be getting any of this… People in Minnesota, people are watching Minnesota.” Reynolds said.
