911 transcripts detail escalating panic at St. Cloud mall

- 911 transcripts reveal the panic among the shoppers and employees inside the Crossroads Center Mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota on Sept. 17, when 20-year-old Dahir Adan entered the mall wearing a security uniform and began stabbing people.

Adan attacked 10 people with a kitchen knife before he was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer.

Almost 100 911 calls were made during the incident. The first person to call 911 told the dispatcher there was someone at the mall stabbing people and urged them to call an ambulance.

“There’s blood everywhere,” the caller said.

Some callers told dispatchers they were hiding inside stores or bathrooms and several employees described victims running into their stores with stab wounds. Other callers reported seeing a man dressed as a police officer wielding a knife and walking through the mall. Dispatchers repeatedly told callers to stay put until police tell them it is okay to leave.

In one call, dispatchers heard a group of people saying Adan had asked them if they were Muslim.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation Joint Terrorism Task Force took over the investigation in late September.

FBI Director James Comey said the incident at Crossroads Center was “at least in part” motivated by “inspiration from radical Islamic groups.”
