MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (KMSP) - A Minneapolis man has been charged after intentionally hitting a man with his vehicle, who later died of his injuries.
Tristen Baier, 20, was charged on Monday with attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault for intentionally hitting Roberto Cortez.
The incident happened on Portland Avenue South near 28th Street on Saturday.
According to the criminal complaint, a witness told police he heard a noise behind his home and went out to investigate where he found Baier smashing a car’s windows with a baseball bat. The witness then chased after Baier, who got into a van and drove at the witness. Baier’s van smashed into a parked vehicle, but he continued to drive. The witness told police people came out to look at the damaged vehicle, and that’s when Baier drove his van at the people. Cortez was struck and badly injured, he died from his injuries at the hospital on Monday.
Baier told police he was mad at his ex-girlfriend and smashed her car windows with the bat.
Baier’s first court appearance is Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
