PALM BAY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) -
Palm Bay firefighters held a ladder climb Saturday for the Children's Hunger Project.
Firefighters were at the Wal-Mart on Malabar Road SouthEast Saturday to raise money through the purchase of gift cards that will be used by the Children's Hunger Project for local food distribution for kids.
Palm Bay firefighters climbed a 100 foot aerial ladder truck for each gift card that was purchased while carrying a bag of food with them as they went up.
"People don't realize it but there are school children that go home each weekend with little or no food to eat," said Firefighter John Mellace who is helping coordinate this year's event. "The Children's Hunger Project provides food for these hungry children and whatever we can do to support them is good for the kids and good for our community as a whole."
The program is specifically aimed at elementary school students who are experiencing critical periods of growth and development.
