ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) - Governor Mark Dayton issued a proclamation declaring Oct. 22, 2016 as Jacob Wetterling Day.
The day marks the 27th anniversary of Jacob's kidnapping.
Earlier this month, Danny Heinrich confessed to kidnapping and killing Jacob Wetterling nearly 27 years ago. Since Jacob's kidnapping, his parents focused their efforts on child advocacy and created the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center.
Dayton encourages people to leave their porch lights on for Jacob on Saturday night and Sunday night. On Sunday, there will be a community memorial service for Jacob at College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn.
The "Running HOME for Jacob 5K" will be held in his honor by the JWRC at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016.
