Body of Luther College student from Eden Prairie found in Iowa river

- A Luther College student from Eden Prairie, Minn. was found dead in the Upper Iowa River outside Decorah, Iowa on Sunday morning.

Bjorn Norderhaug, 21, was reported missing on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. He was last seen in downtown Decorah around 1:50 a.m. on Saturday morning, according to Decorah police. Local law enforcement and Luther College staff began searching along the Upper Iowa River on Sunday morning.

At approximately 9:32 a.m., the Winneshiek County sheriff’s office received a report of a body located in the river near Clay Hill Road outside of Decorah. Rescue crews recovered the body from the river. The Winneshiek County medical examiner’s officer positively identified the body as Norderhaug.

Norderhaug was a computer science major at Luther College. The college held a prayer and remembrance service for Norderhaug on Sunday evening.

“The Luther community is devastated by this loss and continues to pray for Bjorn’s family.” Luther College President Paula Carlson said in a statement. “We ask that the community come together and support one another in this difficult time.”

The college is also offering counseling support to students.

The incident remains under investigation, according to Decorah police.
