2-year-old boy dies in 'terrible accident' at daycare in Circle Pines, Minn.

The Anoka County Sheriff's Department is investigating what’s being called a “terrible accident” after a toddler died at a home daycare Friday in Circle Pines.

According to Anoka County Sheriff’s Commander Paul Sommer, 22-month-old Cameron Lange was in a "Pack ’n Play," similar to a portable crib, under a loft bed. He tried to crawl out but Sommer said there wasn’t enough room for the boy to free himself and “he was hanging by his head on the Pack ’n Play and the other object.”

Emergency personnel took Cameron to a St. Paul hospital, but he did not make it.

The incident happened at Little Hands Child Care, which operates out of the home of Amanda J. Schug on the 200 block of Little John Drive. The sheriff’s department is considering this an accident, and said the daycare operator is distraught.

"The daycare provider certainly didn't have any intent to hurt this child at all, but just a set of circumstances occurred and a tragedy was a result," Sommer said.

The Department of Human Services has suspended the daycare provider's license while the case is being investigated. Schug’s home daycare was licensed for up to 10 children.
