Minnesota woman goes overboard, empty boat spins 'Circle of Death'

A 62-year-old woman went overboard while boating on Serpent Lake in Crosby, Minn. over the weekend, leaving her hollering for help as the unoccupied boat spun in circles. According to the Crow Wing County sheriff, the incident happened at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The boater, identified as Laurie Jenniges of Long Lake, Minn., was not wearing a life jacket at the time. A passing boater came to the rescue, and Jenniges was brought to the Crosby Hospital for evaluation.

"This individual is very lucky as the water temperatures are still very cold and hypothermia sets in quickly," Sheriff Todd Dahl said. "There is also the risk of being run over by the boat as it out of control in what is known as 'The Circle of Death'. Thankfully with the fishing opener, there were lots of boaters on the water to help her out and bring her to safety."

Officers disabled the boat by throwing ropes into the propeller, causing the motor to cut-out.
