19-year-old shot during alleged drug deal in Spring Lake Park

A 19-year-old man was shot by a 20-year-old early Wednesday morning Spring Lake Park.

The 19-year-old victim from Circle Pines, showed up at Unity Hospital with a gunshot wound to his chest around 3:30 a.m. Police say the suspected shooter and victim knew each other, and detectives were told that the gunshot happened during an alleged attempted purchase of a small amount of marijuana.

Police say the victim is expected to be OK.

The suspect has been arrested, but not charged, according to the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office. He’s been identified by police as Johnelle Stampley of Spring Lake Park.

The incident prompted Spring Lake Park High School to take precautions at the start of the school day.

Spring Lake Park High School principal, Jane Stevenson informed families and students on the school’s website that the exterior doors were locked and staff members were posted at each entrance to allow students into the building when they arrived for class this morning.

Stevenson also provided an update at 7:55 a.m.

“I wanted to update families about the situation that happened near the Highway 65 walking bridge earlier this morning.

The Spring Lake Park Police Department notified us that the situation has been resolved. School will start on time and will follow a regular schedule.

Thank you for your patience this morning.”

Stampley is being held at the Anoka County Jail pending formal charges.
