Northside Minneapolis cafe serves food for social change

- Breaking Bread Cafe, a Northside restaurant that uses food to inspire change, will now be open on the weekends.

The cafe on West Broadway celebrated its first weekend open on Saturday as part of the FLOW Northside Arts Crawl. The restaurant serves global comfort food with items, like jerk shrimp with cheese grits and maraschino cherry brisket.

Breaking Bread Cafe is operated by Appetite For Change, a non-profit organization with the focus on using food as a tool for social change. That mission makes the cafe much more than a restaurant to families in north Minneapolis.

"I love making people good food that they can take food and feed their children, so their children don't have to eat the junk everyday," said Brandy Bliss, a cook at Breaking Bread Cafe.

The cafe uses local food grown by Northside youth on urban farms throughout the city. This summer, 35 Northside youth are participating in the process.

"We're giving a platform for people to operate in their power on the food they put in their bodies," said Princess Titus, Appetite For Change co-founder.

The Breaking Bread Cafe will now be open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
