Newberger, referring to a proposed extension of the Northstar Commuter Rail line from its current northern terminus in Big Lake up past the Minnesota Correctional Facility near St. Cloud, said, "Boy, wouldn't that be convenient to have that rail line going from the prison to north Minneapolis?"
As scattered boos could be heard around the chamber, Newberger immediately tried to nip the controversy created by his comments in the bud.
"I'm not casting any aspersions on north Minneapolis, okay. So I know some folks got their ire up and rightfully so. But sometimes as we're speaking, uh, that's what came into my mind," he said.
Today, Gov. Mark Dayton blasted Newberger's remarks, calling them "disgraceful." He called on Newberger to apologize and MNGOP House leadership to rebuke him. (UPDATE -- Newberger has apologized for his comments.)
