17-year-old charged in shooting deaths of baby, man in south Minneapolis

17-year-old Jquan Mcinnis has been charged with first degree murder in the shooting deaths of 20-year-old Gustav Christianson and seven-month-old Jayden Redden.

According to the criminal complaint, Mcinnis admitted to the murders in a post-Miranda interview with police.

He is charged as an adult with two counts of premeditated murder and two counts of murder by drive by shooting.

“It’s not a juvenile act when you take a gun and you shoot somebody in broad daylight and kill a kid,” said Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman. “That’s homicide. That’s idiocy. And if we can prove what we put forth in the allegations, he deserves a lot of time in the big house.”

The shooting took place on Sunday at 26th Street and 11th Avenue S. around 1 p.m. Christianson and the baby were in the backseat of a parked car when they were shot.

Investigators believe Mcinnis shot Christianson over unpaid debts.

“McInnis is driving through the neighborhood. He sees Christianson. He parks his car a block away, runs through a couple yards, they talk briefly and then he starts shooting,” said Freeman.

According to the criminal complaint, Mcinnis fired shots into the backseat, moving to the back of the car and shooting through the back window. He told police he did not know Redden was in the car at the time.

Christianson was not related to Redden. Police say he was friends with the boy’s mother.

Freeman said he would seek the maximum sentence of life in prison without possibility of parole until 30 years. He has also requested bail be set at $2 million.
