MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - A Metro Transit bus driver had to swerve onto a south Minneapolis sidewalk to avoid what could have been a catastrophic crash near the intersection of E. 27th Street and Bloomington Avenue. No major injuries were reported in the accident, which happened shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Preliminary information indicates a van ran through a stop sign clipping the Route 14C bus. The bus driver narrowly avoided crashing into a nearby fire house while careening onto the sidewalk, also avoiding several houses and a light pole.
"She deserves a raise," said crash witness Anthony Morrishow, praising the bus driver's actions. "She missed 3 cars parked there and missed all of that. All the way up to there until she stopped.”
There were about 10 people on the bus, and 4 to 5 passengers had minor injuries. EMTs from the nearby fire station rushed to help the injured van driver and bus passengers.
“We train for it constantly," said firefighter Bilal Atiq. "You can’t just come to the fire station and kick back and all that. You always have to be ready. You have no idea what’s going to happen.”
