ROCHESTER, Minn. (KMSP) - A 56-year-old man died while competing in the first leg of a triathlon in Rochester, Minn. on Sunday morning.
The Rochester Police Department told Fox 9 the triathlete was swimming the sprint course of the Rochesterfest Triathlon at Foster Arend Lake at approximately 8:51 a.m.. After noticing him in distress, one of the racers tried to help, but the man disappeared under the water.
The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office dive team and Rochester Fire Department already had a rescue boat on-hand in the lake and were able to respond immediately. Crews pulled the man into the boat, but he was not breathing and didn’t have a pulse. Attempts to resuscitate him failed. He has not been identified.
It is not known whether the man had a medical issue that may have contributed to the accident, Rochester police chief told Fox 9. The medical examiner will perform a full autopsy to determine the cause of death.
