CALLAWAY, Minn. (KMSP) - The propane truck driver involved in the March 24 train crash and derailment that forced an evacuation of Callaway, Minnesota has been charged for his role in the incident. Biya Abdella Buta, 31, of North Dakota is charged in Becker County with criminal vehicular operation, reckless driving and failure to stop at a railroad crossing.
Canadian Pacific Railway released onboard video to investigators that showed Buta’s truck never stopped at the crossing before the crash. Canadian Pacific said 11 empty train cars and one locomotive derailed as a result of the crash. None of the cars were carrying hazardous materials and none of the train cars caught on fire. The railroad said its train crew sounded the locomotive’s horn as the train approached the crossing.
Buta’s first court appearance is scheduled for June 13.
