For Kimberly Brown, love of music leads to weight loss

Music is a big part of who Kimberly Brown is. It's what kicked off her involvement with the American Heart Association after a church event about eight years ago.

"I signed up to be an ambassador and volunteer and started doing some music with them," Brown says.

One of Brown's songs, entitled "Get Up, Get Movin,'" was written to inspire people to get 30 minutes of exercise a day.

But along her journey as a volunteer, Kimberly also learned some things about herself.

"I'm the most food-aholic, food addictive, late-night eating fast food-driving person, loving the sight, smell, and taste of food there is," Brown says.

In an interesting turn of events, "Get Up, Get Movin'" landed Brown on the Dr. Oz Show. She had submitted the song to Dr. Oz, but was contacted about doing a weight loss special instead.

Her participation in the show led to her losing weight.

"It was the first program I was able to stick to and it really, really worked," Brown says.

Brown says she's tried a total of 10 rapid weight loss plans. She's lost 25 pounds so far, and even though her family doesn't have a history of heart disease, her work with the American Heart Association gave her a wake-up call for her own health.

"For me, personally, high cholesterol is a problem," Brown says. "My numbers are really, really good now."

In 2011, Kimberly received the Volunteer Ambassador Appreciation Award.
