The 18-year veteran Officer Michael Talley is doing well after the incident, St. Paul police confirmed. The other officer involved, Melissa Leistikow, has spent 4 months on the job.
On Friday, police were performing a welfare check on a reportedly suicidal man at a duplex near Oakland Cemetery after his doctor had contacted authorities. St. Paul Police Sgt. Paul Paulos said at a news conference police had conducted five checks on 53-year-old Robert Wood in the past year, and his fiancee said he has battled depression and mental illness for most of his life.
The call came in at about 2:15 p.m., the man apparently barricaded inside of the duplex at 43 Lyton Place. Wood came out with a knife in his hand, and then returned to the house, firing the air rife which hit the officer in the cheek.
The SWAT team was called in, and the incident was resolved by 4:30 p.m. when Wood was pulled out of the house, completely naked at the time, and loaded into a police vehicle and taken to the Ramsey County Jail for felony assault.
