Smoke fills the air in Minnesota

- Smelling smoke?  You’re not alone as many communities in and out of the metro are smelling smoke, but don’t be alarmed because the smoke we are smelling are from wildfires mostly out of the state.  Our recent cold front is responsible for the cooler air, but it also turned winds out of the north and pushed a lot of the incoming smoke from Canadian wildfires down to the ground.  This has given much of the area a pretty thick coating of smoke.  Combine that with at least one fairly large wildfire burning in the northern part of the state, and you have the recipe for a smelly and unhealthy atmosphere.  Here is the location of two different fires in northern Minnesota…

Because of the smoke, air quality has taken a BIG hit.  The metro has been EXTREMELY unhealthy through parts of the morning with the fine particles index well over 200…

Areas of smoke will likely be found through the day with more pouring in and pushing through the area Saturday afternoon.  Here is the approximate location of some of the heaviest smoke by late this afternoon…

Central and southern Minnesota still targeted, with additional smoke in the north from the two local wildfires that are burning.  You will need to be diligent about outdoor activities today as smoke could move in and out from time to time.  If you smell smoke, sensitive groups should head indoors until the smoke smell clears, then it will be safe enough to head back outside.
