MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Target announced Tuesday that it welcomes all transgender customers and employees to use the store's restrooms and fitting rooms that correspond with their gender identity.
The Minneapolis-based company made the announcement while showing support for the federal Equality Act, which provides protections to LGBT individuals and opposes action that enables discrimination.
“Inclusivity is a core belief at Target,” the company said in a statement. “It’s something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day."
Legislation similar to the law recently passed in North Carolina is being debated in several states including Minnesota. Minnesota's bill, proposed by state Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen (R-Glencoe), would require people to use the restrooms, locker rooms and other similar places that correspond to their biological sex.
