Resilient residents look to rebuild after fire destroyed downtown Madelia

- Two months after a large fire took out a majority of downtown Madelia, the residents are already looking to rebuild.

“We're a resilient bunch,” Tom Osborne, President of “Madelia Strong”, said. “There hasn't been a thought about not doing anything. The thought's been ‘how fast can we get on our feet?’”

Osborne has watched the progress at his accounting business across the street. His business escaped the holes that remain in some windows, caused by multiple explosions from the other side of the street.

Nancy Vee lost her business, EZ Medical Wrap, in the fire.

“We actually got an order the day of the fire, and I called the lady and said ‘we burned down, would you like your money back?’ And she said ‘I'll wait until you're up and running again,’” Vee said.

Despite no insurance, she re-opened in a new location on April 1. Planning to stay in their new location, Vee and her sister keep a burned sewing machine as a reminder of what's gone.

The city hopes to begin construction as early as next month, and finish construction as early as the fall.
