Fire causes $1 million in damage at historic church in Melrose, Minn.

- Authorities are trying to determine what started a fire that caused more than $1 million in damage at a historic church in Melrose, Minn. Friday night. 

A deacon was returning from running errands around 4:43 p.m. when he spotted the fire at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 203 5th Avenue SE and called 911, according to the Melrose Fire Department. The fire was under control by 8 p.m.

Damage to the church, which was built in 1898, could exceed more than $1 million, according to preliminary estimates.

The Minnesota State Fire Marshal Division is investigating the cause of the fire. Federal agents will also be contacted because the fire took place in a religious structure.
