1 dead in Woodbury senior living fire

One person died in a fire at a senior living complex in Woodbury, Minn. early Friday morning. The fire was reported at 4:18 a.m. at the Woodbury Senior Living Complex on Lake Road.

Russell W. Johnson, 77, was later identified by authorities as the man who passed away.

Firefighters found heavy fire and smoke coming from his first floor apartment. When they put out the fire, they found Johnson dead inside the unit. Two other residents were injured and taken to a nearby hospital, and a firefighter at the scene suffered from symptoms of smoke inhalation.

All 71 residents were evacuated to an adjacent building, and by 7:45 a.m. most residents were allowed re-entry to their apartments. Woodbury Senior Living is working with 9 displaced residents to find temporary housing.

The 7008 Lake Road building was current and in compliance with fire code and building inspection, the last inspection was conducted in November of 2014.

Cause of fire results will be released as soon as they are determined and available.
