Doctors writing prescriptions for fruits, veggies for kids

- Children who visit HealthPartners and Park Nicollet clinics for checkups this summer will receive a prescription from their doctor for fruits and vegetables.

At the beginning of June, doctors at all 58 HealthPartners and Park Nicollet clinics began writing “prescriptions” redeemable for $10 of fresh produce at various grocery stores in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

The program began three years ago at the HealthPartners clinics in Hugo and White Bear Lake, but this is the first year the prescriptions are being offered at all 58 clinics.  It is based on research that links eating fruits and vegetables to improved health. HealthPartners’ is hoping to reach approximately 16,000 families this year.

“Fruits and vegetables are a key to healthy family eating,” Andrew Dorwart, St. Croix Valley Medical Director, said in a statement.  “The voucher is a way to help make it a little easier to get more fruits and vegetables.”

The prescriptions can be redeemed through July at any Cub Foods store and at various Festival Foods and Family Fresh locations.
