Halloween safety tips

- While we don't want to spook you too much before Halloween, consider this sobering statistic from SafeKids.org: chances of getting hit by a car DOUBLE on Halloween night. Mpls.St.Paul magazine style editor Allison Kaplan has some ideas to keep your little ghosts and goblins safe.

Stay Warm: It’s easier than ever to keep hands, toes, and core warm during trick-or-treating without sacrificing your costume. We found several insulating items at L.L.Bean:

Thin stretch gloves in black to keep hands warm, while able to grab candy

Shearling insoles for shoes or boots

Ultralight down sweater/jacket

Ultrathin base layer

Keep Track: Technology makes it possible to track your trick-or-treaters if they run ahead. A few new products from the Verizon Destination Store:

•  Gizmo Pal 2 – Perfect for kiddos who don’t need, or aren’t ready for a full-fledged phone yet, the GizmoPal 2 by LG allows kids to receive and make calls to a set list of numbers. The device can also receive texts! With GPS capabilities, parents will always know where the child is or can get notifications if the child crosses a GPS boundary. It requires a monthly data fee, and it comes in pink or blue. $79

•   Moto Z Force Droid - The device is the world’s thinnest smartphone with a shatter proof screen, a larger battery with “Turbo Fast” charging (15 hours of power with a 15 min charge) and several “magic” features (chop twice for flashlight). $30/month for 24 months

•    Noke Bluetooth Padlock – Take a 2016-approach to locking up your candy! The Noke Bluetooth Padlock unlocks using Bluetooth technology, just hold your phone close to the lock and it unlocks automatically. You can also monitor access remotely via the app. $69.99

•   Also remember that most smart phones have: flashlight for dark streets and apps to track family members.

Be Visible: Brilliant Reflective Safety strips

A new product from a local dad, these strips come in four colors and adhere to costumes, shoes, dog leashes, helmets —almost anything, to make wearers visible to a vehicle from hundreds of feet away. $9.99 for 30 square inches, brilliantreflective.com
