GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. (KMSP) - Fox 9’s Top Teacher award goes to Liz Kinville, a fourth grade teacher at the School of Engineering and Arts (SEA) in Golden Valley, Minn.
The school opened in 2012 and Ms. Kinville has been there since the start helping to establish the curriculum. Parents say she is a role model, inspiring, and helps her students excel in academics in a way that also builds their confidence.
“I tell my students that my goal for them is to not need me by the end of the year,” she told Fox 9. “Be good people, and work hard even when I’m not there watching them.”
Anne Olson, a parent of one of Ms. Kinville’s students, said she started a SEA knitting club to encourage the students to learn a new skill.
“Ms. Kinville spends every Friday morning at 8 a.m. with her door open for the students to learn to knit,” Olson said. “She sources and uses her own supplies and welcomes all fourth and fifth grade students."
Ms. Kinville was also the first teacher in the school to open up lines of communication with parents via text message – “This is so important as a parent to have multiple ways she communicates to ensure that all parents are well informed with the happenings of the class,” Olson said.
A $900 check donated by Royal Credit Union was presented to Ms. Kinville on Tuesday. She said she plans to use it on school supplies and more books for her classroom library.
